Vouchsafe, a UK-based identity verification platform, has successfully closed an oversubscribed £1 million pre-seed funding round aimed at addressing global ID poverty and enhancing identity verification processes.
The investment round was led by Bethnal Green Ventures, Europe’s leading tech-for-good venture capital firm. Additional participants in the seed round included Biometric Ventures, Fuel Ventures, Seed X Liechtenstein, and angel investor Andrew Chevis, CEO of CitizenCard, who brings three decades of industry expertise to Vouchsafe’s mission.
Vouchsafe aims to tackle the pressing issue of ID poverty, which affects approximately one billion individuals worldwide, including 11 million in the UK who lack access to reliable photo identification. This deficiency often results in significant barriers to essential services such as banking, credit, and public services, thereby exacerbating financial exclusion and the poverty premium.
The company’s innovative approach to identity verification balances accessibility and security, especially crucial in an era where generative AI is making identity fraud more sophisticated. Vouchsafe’s platform accepts a wider range of evidence than traditional methods, including real-time digital documents like eVisas. It also offers fallback options such as vouching from trusted referees, ensuring every user has a fair opportunity to verify their identity. Additionally, the platform provides market-leading background checks, including online footprint analysis, to detect fabricated identities.
The funding will enable Vouchsafe to enhance its platform with new features, including alerts for continuous due diligence, smart lookups for standalone background checks, and additional methods for individuals to prove their identity using new and rare forms of evidence.
Vouchsafe is already making significant strides, collaborating with the Scottish Government to assist one million Scots in accessing public services and working with Fair4All Finance to expand access to credit.
